Numisart was established in 2001 and is run by a small team of committed experts. The company’s focus is on ancient coins and Classical antiquities. We are based in Vienna, hometown of the Austrian classical scholar Joseph Hilarius Eckhel (1737–1798), widely considered as the ‘father of modern numismatics’.

Dr. Christian Niederhuber, director of Numisart, is a university-trained Classical archaeologist and numismatist. He studied Classical Archaeology and Numismatics in Vienna, Munich, and Oxford, where he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, the flagship research award of the prestigious University of Oxford. He is an expert in ancient Greek and Roman art and ancient numismatics.

His research interests include art and visual cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world, with a particular interest in portrait studies. He has written several books and academic papers, notably a study on Roman Imperial Portrait Practice, published by Oxford University Press in 2022. As a sworn and court-certified expert, his expertise is widely esteemed in Europe and beyond.
